Bangsamoro pop singer resolves copyright dispute with Australian artist Lenka

Bangsamoro pop sensation Shaira Moro has reached a peaceful agreement with Australian singer-songwriter Lenka. The dispute revolved around Shaira’s viral hit “Selos,” which featured a melody similar to Lenka’s 2008 track “Trouble is a Friend.”

Shaira Moro shared the news through a video on her Facebook page, stating, “Wala pong kaso ang isinampa sa amin. Sa katunayan, naging mahinahon at mapayapa ang pag-uusap namin ng kampo ni Lenka at nauwi po ito sa pagkakaroon ng kasunduan.” [No case was filed against us. In fact, our discussions with Lenka’s camp were calm and peaceful, leading to an agreement.]

The agreement allows Shaira’s record label to re-release “Selos” on online streaming platforms, a move that will coincide with the release of her other new songs. She expressed her hope for positivity moving forward, emphasizing the significance of the resolution for fellow Bangsamoro artists and Filipinos alike. “Sana po ngayon ay maging masaya na lamang po tayo dahil hindi lang naman po ito para sa akin, para rin po dito sa mga kapwa kong Bangsamoro artists at sa mga kapwa kong Pilipino,” she added.

Shaira also addressed the initial negative responses she received when the copyright issue first came to light. She revealed her hurt feelings from reading negative comments on Facebook, where she felt criticized rather than supported. Despite the challenges, Shaira and her team opted for a quiet settlement to avoid further tensions, asking for understanding and seeing the criticism as motivation to improve.

“Selos” has gained significant popularity on streaming platforms, inspiring numerous dance covers and humorous content on TikTok. Although “Selos” and “Trouble is a Friend” share a melody, their lyrics and messages differ markedly, highlighting the creative divergence between the two artists.
