Gaming proves beneficial for Filipino Gen Z’s mental health

In recent findings from TotallyAwesome, a leading Youth-first marketing and media platform, Filipino Gen Z individuals are increasingly turning to online gaming as a means to alleviate stress and anxiety. The study dispels some of the negative perceptions associated with the activity.

TotallyAwesome’s ‘Youth-first Digital Insights’ research for 2023 analyzed the effects of gaming on the mental well-being and engagement of Gen Z and Gen Alpha in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. The study revealed that 43% of Gen Z and 50% of Gen Alpha within the APAC region resort to gaming as a source of comfort during times of stress or anxiety. This contrasts significantly with those who seek solace in talking with family members (21% for Gen Z and 28% for Gen Alpha) or friends (32% for Gen Z and 28% for Gen Alpha).

Within this context, the Philippines, accompanied by Malaysia, ranked second, with 56% of its Gen Z respondents highlighting gaming as their preferred method of stress relief. Vietnam topped the list at 60%.

Additionally, gaming is not just about personal relief. A substantial number of respondents view it as a medium for fostering connections. In fact, 48% of Gen Z and 52% of Gen Alpha respondents expressed that gaming enhanced their connection with friends and family.

TotallyAwesome’s Executive Chairman, Will Anstee, commented on the findings, stating, “Gaming is transcending its traditional boundaries. For the younger generation, it’s not just a pastime but a critical space for social bonding and self-expression.”

Despite these insights, the primary reason both Gen Z and Gen Alpha engage in gaming remains entertainment, with a whopping 69% playing for fun. This is followed by 51% who play to combat stress and anxiety, while another 50% believe gaming elevates their mood.
