78 Filipino job seekers rescued from cramped Makati housing run by recruitment firm

A government rescue carried out under Closure Order No. 2 has placed 78 aspiring overseas Filipino workers under state protection after labor regulators determined they were being housed in conditions that failed safety standards in Makati City.

Officials traced the applicants to Jenerick International Manpower Incorporated. Those interviewed at the scene said the firm had promised them placements as household workers bound for various countries across Asia and the Middle East, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

What drew regulators to the Palanan site was the lodging itself. The accommodation where the recruits were being kept carried no registration and lacked the clearance permit the department requires for such facilities. Inspectors who looked over the premises found it unsuitable for housing people at all, citing cramped quarters, poor airflow, and an absence of basic safety provisions.

DMW-National Capital Region Regional Director Atty. Falconi Millar directed the operation, supported by the Migrant Workers Protection Division. The department framed the action as one piece of a broader enforcement drive against trafficking and unlicensed recruitment, which it said follows the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

Once the applicants were removed, the department coordinated with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration to arrange immediate support, covering both cash aid and a place to stay temporarily. Makati’s city government also took part, helping keep the operation orderly and without incident.

The department renewed its call for job seekers and their relatives to confirm an agency’s license, job order, and supporting papers directly with the DMW before handing over money, signing anything, or advancing further in any application.

For workers weighing offers abroad, the department’s message was to treat overseas job promises with caution and to bring suspected recruitment irregularities to the attention of the DMW or other authorities.
