A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck southern Taiwan on Tuesday, according to the island’s weather bureau. The epicenter was near the city of Chiayi, with the quake occurring at a depth of 9.4 kilometers (6 miles).
The tremor caused buildings to sway in the capital city, Taipei, located in the northern part of the island.
Taiwan, situated along the boundary of two tectonic plates, frequently experiences seismic activity, making earthquakes a common occurrence. Authorities have not yet reported any significant damage or casualties related to the quake.
