Zamboanga Valientes bring size and experience to Dubai basketball tilt

With only a short runway to prepare, the MLV-Zamboanga Valientes are turning to roster balance and competitive hunger as they head into the Dubai International Basketball Invitationals, which tip off on January 24.

Speaking to SPIN.PH, veteran center Greg Slaughter pointed to the team’s physical profile and backcourt depth as key equalizers despite limited build-up time. He described a group built around size up front, complemented by proven guards, a mix he believes can offset any gaps in preparation.

“I like the composition of our team. We are big and then we have some of the best guards out there,” Slaughter said.

The Valientes’ frontline features multiple imposing bodies, led by the 7-foot Slaughter, 6-foot-11 Malik Diouf and 6-foot-8 Anthony Bennett, alongside returning 7-foot-5 import Sam Deguara. The roster also includes former PBA standouts Terrence Romeo and Vic Manuel, adding experience to a lineup that blends youth and familiarity with high-level competition.

“The competition in the Middle East is tough but owing to the experience of the players in this team, and our size, I think we have a very good chance,” Slaughter said.

Beyond physical tools, Slaughter noted an internal edge driving the squad, with several players looking to reassert themselves in professional circles. He said that shared urgency has sharpened the team’s approach heading into the international meet.

“That’s what I like about this team, most of the guys out there are still fighting for slots in different leagues like the PBA. So, expect them to give it their all,” he said.

That situation also applies to teammates Mike Tolomia, Nick Demusis and Dennis Santos, while Forthsky Padrigao and Zamboanga Sibugay high-flyer Bryan Manuel complete the lineup. The team is set to arrive in Dubai on Thursday to allow time for adjustment and acclimatization.

Drawn into Group B, the Valientes will face Al Ahli Tripoli-Libya, Club Africain, Alkarama Sport Club and Sports Club Beirut in a single-round group stage, while Group A features the UAE national team, Al Nasr Club, Homs al Fida, Al Ittihad Libya and Al Wahda.

Team founder Junnie Navarro said the campaign is rooted in broader goals beyond wins and losses, emphasizing exposure for Filipino athletes, particularly those from Zamboanga, on an international platform.
