A 21-year-old Thai social media influencer, Thanakarn Kanthee, widely known as “Bank Leicester,” tragically passed away after participating in a paid challenge to consume a 350ml bottle of whisky, Bangkok Post reported.
Thanakarn, who gained popularity for his improvised rap performances and videos of himself accepting drinking challenges for money, was rushed to the hospital after completing the stunt. He reportedly vomited and fell ill shortly after consuming the whisky at a party. He was pronounced dead at 3:40 AM on Thursday.
Videos from the event showed a cheering crowd recording Thanakarn on their phones as he drank rapidly from the bottle. Despite the festive atmosphere, the aftermath drew criticism, particularly when a viral video captured onlookers laughing as rescuers carried him to an ambulance.
Raised by his grandmother in a Bangkok slum, Thanakarn began selling garlands at the age of seven to support his family. His struggles were reflected in a poignant social media post where he shared his willingness to endure hardships to provide for his loved ones.
The incident sparked outrage online, with many netizens condemning the challenge as irresponsible and harmful. Social media activist Guntouch Pongpaiboonwet has offered legal assistance to Thanakarn’s family, urging accountability from those who organized the deadly stunt.
“People were quick to make content and have fun, but when it came to responsibility, no one stepped forward,” Guntouch said, pledging to help the family pursue justice.
