A 24-year-old Indian expat, Mohammed, has successfully undergone a pioneering cartilage transplant at Medcare Royal Speciality Hospital, following a severe knee injury sustained while playing football. The procedure, led by Dr. Karthikraj Kuberakani, an Orthopaedic Surgeon at the hospital, has spared Mohammed from a total knee replacement, offering hope to athletes facing similar injuries.
Mohammed had been struggling with knee discomfort and locking since the injury, which severely limited his daily activities and prevented him from participating in sports. After consulting various experts, he found a lasting solution at Medcare Royal Speciality Hospital.
Dr. Karthikraj explained, “The patient had significant cartilage loss, which could have led to arthritis and a future knee replacement. We opted for the MEGA OATS procedure to restore his knee function and prevent long-term complications.”
The MEGA OATS (Osteochondral Autograft Transfer System) procedure involves transplanting healthy cartilage from a deceased donor to replace the damaged tissue. It is particularly effective for younger patients with traumatic cartilage injuries.
Following the surgery, Mohammed underwent an extensive rehabilitation program, including physiotherapy and hydrotherapy. Just eight weeks later, he is walking without crutches, and his knee is healing well.
Expressing his gratitude, Mohammed said, “This procedure has given me hope to regain my active life.” He is expected to fully recover and return to playing football in the near future.
