In a country where tropical heat is more the norm than snow and ice, ice skating is not a common pastime. However, 12-year-old Jomar Sta Maria Jr. from the Philippines is defying expectations and making waves in the world of figure skating. Competing in the Skate Asia 2024, held from August 3 to August 11 at the Aurora Ice Rink in Taipei, Taiwan, Jomar showcased his talent and hard work, winning two Gold medals in the Technical and Solo Comp categories, along with two Silver and one Bronze medal.
Jomar’s journey into figure skating began in January 2023, when his family decided to try ice skating for fun at SM Megamall. What started as a family bonding activity quickly turned into a passion.
“My sister suggested we should go ice skating, and ever since then, my family and I would go every week,” Jomar shared with The Global Filipino Magazine.
His enthusiasm for the sport caught the attention of Coach Randy, who encouraged him to participate in Skate Asia 2023 in Hong Kong, where he won three Golds and one Bronze in his first competition.
Reflecting on his recent success at Skate Asia 2024, the Grade 7 Ateneo De Manila University student expressed his joy, saying, “It feels very exciting, and I am very happy and proud of myself for achieving Gold in these events. I have gotten so much support from my family, friends, and many other people.”
Competing at the Aurora Ice Rink in Taipei was a memorable experience for Jomar.
“My experience was amazing. I met new friends, supported my friends, and we all had so much fun,” he added.
Training for such a prestigious competition wasn’t without its challenges. Jomar trained at the SM Megamall Ice Rink under the guidance of Coach Henry, who prepared him for the demanding events.
“Being an athlete doesn’t always mean that things go accordingly to your way. Sometimes we have hard times practicing, and we don’t always perfect the moves and elements. But you could always come over it if you stay humble and listen to your coach,” Jomar explained.
The Skate Asia competition, organized by the Ice Skating Institute Asia (ISIAsia), is one of the major figure skating events in the region, featuring various individual and team performances across different skill levels and age groups. Jomar’s performance this year, which earned him two Golds, two Silvers, and one Bronze, is a testament to his dedication and passion for the sport.
Looking ahead, Jomar has his sights set on even greater achievements.
“I would want to be a professional figure skater and compete around the world. I plan to achieve this by always practicing and doing what my coach says,” he shared with determination.
