Young Filipino scientists bring home STEM awards from California competition

Four Filipino high school students have earned prestigious awards for the Philippines at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2024, the world’s largest pre-college competition for STEM education.

The Department of Education (DepEd) announced the students’ achievements on Wednesday, celebrating their success in science and technology on an international stage.

Three students from Cebu City National Science High School—Michaela Ria Rentuza, Mikaella Rose Macabata, and Wesley Secuya—secured the fourth grand award in the Cellular and Molecular Biology category. Arnon Yzabel Guinto of Tarlac National High School was honored with the National Geographic Society’s Excellence in Geography and Geospatial Science Award.

“Patuloy nating pasiklabin ang ating pagmamahal sa pagtuklas at paglikha para sa mas magandang kinabukasan,” DepEd stated, emphasizing the importance of fostering a love for discovery and innovation for a brighter future.

The competition took place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in California from May 11 to 17, 2024, with a virtual platform available for finalists to present their projects online.
