Just in time for Easter Sunday, a young Filipino artist from the mystical Province of Dinagat Islands has captured attention online with a one-of-a-kind portrait of Jesus Christ using not just one—but nine different art mediums in a single canvas.
Benmark “Benny” Dela Cerna, 19, proudly unveiled his latest work titled “Hesus”, a 16×20-inch masterpiece that he calls a “remake” of his first painting back in 2016, when he was only 10 years old. While his original work was created with house enamel paint on wood, his newest piece showcases his growth and dedication as a visual artist.
“This is my work, po. On the left is my 2025 artwork, and on the right is my first-ever painting, done in 2016 using only house paint—specifically enamel,” he explained to TGFM. “What I did now is a remake of the 2016 piece, but enhanced, because my skills have improved.”
What makes his recent artwork unique is the technique behind it. Dela Cerna coined a new term for it: “Multimediary Art.” According to him, unlike traditional mixed media art where materials are combined in layers, multimediary art involves applying different art styles and materials separately to create a unified portrait.
His artwork incorporates:
- Charcoal & Graphite for black-and-white realism
- Acrylic for vibrant realism
- Oil and Oil Pastel for depth and texture
- Carbon white for heightened contrast
- Coffee for toned, sepia effects
- Watercolor for softness and transparency
- Latex & Enamel for bold, durable strokes
- Marker for pointillism and stippling detail
“Each medium symbolizes the various roles and aspects of Jesus Christ,” he said. “This artwork is my way of expressing gratitude to Him for guiding me through my journey as an artist.”
Benmark, who graduated from Don Ruben Edera Ecleo Sr. Memorial National High School in 2023, was supposed to enter college this year but had to postpone his studies due to financial limitations. He now accepts commissioned works through his art page D’Portraitures and personal Facebook account.
Known for his skill in charcoal and acrylic, Benmark has participated in several local art exhibits and competitions, continuously refining his technique. His inspiration stems from his family, friends, and a “special someone,” as well as his deep belief that art is a divine expression of love.
“I believe God created humans through art. That’s why every stroke I make is dedicated to Him,” he shared.
