You can now bring your pet to some hotels and restaurants in Abu Dhabi

Hotels and restaurants holding tourism licences in Abu Dhabi are now permitted to admit pets after authorities revised long-standing controls on animals in public venues.

The policy shift follows amendments announced by the Department of Municipalities and Transport to Chairman’s Decision No. (4) of 2018, a regulation issued under Law No. (2) of 2012 that sets standards for public health, safety, and animal control.

Under the updated framework, venues may welcome “companion animals,” including cats and dogs, provided they comply with defined operational and regulatory conditions. Businesses are required to set aside specific zones for pets, with outdoor areas—such as terraces, balconies, and patios—identified as the preferred option. Indoor sections may also be designated if hygiene requirements, animal welfare considerations, and guest comfort can be consistently met.

Fahad Ali Alshehhi, Acting Executive Director of the Municipal Services Operations Support Sector, said the revisions align hospitality practices with broader inclusion goals while preserving quality benchmarks. “This move supports the emirate’s goal of being a leading global destination and contributes to its strong performance in international rankings, including recognition as the most liveable city in the Middle East and North Africa,” he added.

Before the change, animals were generally barred from dining venues, aside from certified service animals. The revised rules leave participation optional, allowing operators to decide whether to accommodate pets based on their layout, customer mix, and capacity to meet the new requirements.
