A workers’ group has called on former Vice President Leni Robredo to reconsider her decision not to run for a national post in the 2025 elections. The Federation of Free Workers (FFW) Women’s Network (FWN) made this appeal following Robredo’s recent announcement that she will not be seeking a senatorial seat next year.
“Leni needs to reconsider her decision. The nation needs her in this challenging time. She is the beacon of hope for the opposition and the people in the periphery,” stated Ma. Victoria Bellosillo, spokesperson for the FFW Women’s Network, in a statement released on Saturday.
Robredo, who had previously indicated her preference to run for mayor of Naga City, reaffirmed her decision, saying, “Sinarado ko na … kaya nagpaalam na ako sa LP…kaya ako nagpaalam sa LP na hindi na ako tatakbo sa Senado,” when asked about her plans for the 2025 Senate race.
Despite Robredo’s firm stance, the FFW insists that her leadership is crucial on a national scale. “Baka naman pwede pa buksan ang pinto para sa Senado. May liderato siya at integridad na kinakailangan ng bansa,” said Arta Maines, vice president of the FWN. Maines added, “She can ignite the imagination of our people and propel change for the better.”
The Liberal Party (LP), meanwhile, expressed its support for Robredo’s decision. “Hangad namin ang kanyang tagumpay at pamamayagpag, anuman ang tahakin niyang direksiyon. Lagi namin siyang titingalain,” the party stated.
Robredo has a notable political background, having served as the 14th vice president of the Philippines from 2016 to 2022 and as the 3rd district representative of Camarines Sur from 2013 to 2016. She ran for president in the 2022 elections but lost to Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., securing over 14 million votes compared to Marcos’ over 31 million.
