A 20-year-old woman who claimed to have discovered a newborn baby inside an empty pig pen in Leon, Iloilo, was later revealed to be the infant’s mother, police said.
According to a report by GMA Regional TV One Western Visayas, the woman—identified only as “Ana Mae”—told her relatives on Saturday morning that she had found a baby in a vacant pig enclosure in Barangay Anonang. The newborn was immediately brought to a hospital and is now under the care of the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office.
However, authorities began to question Ana Mae’s story after noticing inconsistencies and bloodstains on her clothes and legs. “We grew suspicious of her behavior,” said Police Lieutenant Mark Cortez, deputy chief of Leon Police Station.
Upon further questioning, Ana Mae confessed that she had given birth to the baby herself. She admitted keeping her pregnancy a secret out of embarrassment, as she was living with relatives.
Police said the woman delivered the child alone and hid the newborn in the pig pen before alerting her family. Investigators also learned that Ana Mae already has a two-year-old child from a previous relationship. The identity of the new baby’s father remains unknown.
