A 36-year-old woman from Narathiwat, Thailand, recently revealed that she had endured 18 years of lower abdominal pain due to a needle left inside her body during childbirth. The Pavena Foundation for Children and Women, a non-governmental organization supporting victims of abuse and harassment, shared the story on November 5.
The woman explained that during childbirth nearly two decades ago, a medical staff member accidentally dropped a needle into her vagina while the doctor was stitching her birth wound. Concerned about excessive bleeding, the team chose to close the wound without removing the needle.
It wasn’t until 2023 that an X-ray confirmed the presence of the needle. Doctors have attempted three times to remove it surgically, but the procedures have been postponed each time due to the needle shifting positions.
She currently visits the hospital three to four times a month for monitoring, which has become a financial burden despite having insurance, as her family is not well-off. The Pavena Foundation is now coordinating with local authorities to arrange her transportation for medical visits. Further details on her treatment and surgery are pending.
