Woman dies after chiropractic neck adjustment

A 29-year-old gym enthusiast in the UK died after seeking chiropractic treatment for neck pain, which was later linked to her death, Gateshead and South Tyneside Coroner reported.

Joanna Kowalczyk experienced a neck injury while working out and initially sought medical advice, where she was recommended a CT scan and a lumbar puncture to prevent hemorrhage. She underwent the scan but opted for chiropractic treatment instead of further medical procedures.

Despite informing the chiropractor about her CT scan, her medical history was not reviewed before a four-week treatment plan began. During one session, she developed dizziness, nausea, and double vision. The chiropractor conducted a stroke assessment, which showed no immediate signs, and advised her to visit the hospital. However, Kowalczyk chose to go home with the assistance of her partner.

Later, medical professionals diagnosed her symptoms as a migraine, considering dizziness common after chiropractic adjustments. However, her condition worsened the next day, leading to a medical emergency. She was rushed to the hospital, where she was intubated and ventilated but died two days later.

A coroner’s report confirmed that Kowalczyk suffered an arterial dissection following her initial injury, which contributed to her death due to complications from chiropractic treatment. In response, the General Chiropractic Council has been urged to implement stricter protocols, including mandatory medical history checks before treatment.

The council acknowledged the coroner’s recommendations and stated they would review the concerns to ensure chiropractic care remains safe and patient-focused.
