Woman arrested for allegedly locking naked partner outside, leading to fatal hypothermia

A 54-year-old woman in Nagasaki, Japan, has been arrested on charges of assault and unlawful confinement after allegedly forcing her partner onto their balcony while naked, leading to his death from cold, authorities said Friday.

According to an AFP, citing the local police, the incident occurred in February 2022 when the woman reportedly ordered her 49-year-old common-law husband to step onto the balcony and locked him outside overnight. The next day, emergency responders found him in critical condition inside the residence. He later succumbed to hypothermia, with temperatures that night dropping to 3.7°C (38.7°F), local reports stated.

Authorities also revealed that prior to the incident, the woman had attacked the victim with a knife, causing injuries to his nose that required two weeks to heal.

The suspect has denied the accusations, stating, “I’ve done nothing,” according to police. Officials have not disclosed why the formal charges were only filed recently.
