In celebration of World Mental Health Day, the Philippine Nurses Association of Oman, Inc. (PNAO) proudly presented the webinar “Self-Awareness and the OFW Experience” with the theme “Empowering OFWs Through Self-Awareness: Strengthening Resilience, Identity, and Well-Being Beyond Borders.”
The session brought to light the profound importance of self-awareness as the foundation of personal and professional growth for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). More than just an abstract concept, self-awareness was emphasized as a practical guiding light, helping Filipinos abroad pause, reflect, and rediscover themselves amidst the unique demands of overseas life. It was presented as the cornerstone of self-improvement, the key that unlocks clarity, resilience, and empowerment in the face of challenges far from home.

The Journey Within: Tools for Self-Awareness
The discussion highlighted that cultivating self-awareness requires both inner work and intentional practice. Participants were reminded that creating quiet spaces, embracing solitude, and engaging in moments of soul-searching allow for healing, clarity, and recalibration. Practical strategies such as gratitude journaling, reflective writing, meditation, and updating one’s personal dreams were introduced as transformative habits that nurture positivity, strengthen resilience, and create direction in life.
Simple yet powerful practices like social media fasting, solitude for healing, and consciously pursuing one’s authentic passions were encouraged as small but impactful steps that empower individuals to reclaim time, energy, and focus. These practices not only relieve stress but also foster gratitude, mindfulness, and a deeper appreciation of life’s experiences.
The Power of Community and Collective Growth

While self-awareness is deeply personal, the webinar also underscored the role of community and shared growth. Supportive groups, whether professional associations, peer networks, or faith communities, provide encouragement, accountability, and collective wisdom that help OFWs sustain their sense of identity and well-being in multicultural environments. Through these bonds, self-awareness becomes not only an individual pursuit but also a shared journey that strengthens unity and resilience across borders.
A Grateful Acknowledgment
On behalf of PNAO, we extend our deepest gratitude to Mr. Jonas Usbal Dupo, RN, MPH, MSN, CEO and President of John 14:14 Group of Companies, for graciously delivering an inspirational and thought-provoking talk. His message not only enriched our understanding of self-awareness but also offered practical, heartfelt strategies that our kababayans can carry with them in their journeys overseas.
We likewise celebrate the active participation of 34 OFWs from different parts of the world, whose presence and eagerness to learn made this event more meaningful and impactful. Our sincere appreciation also goes to the officers and members of PNAO, whose unwavering dedication, commitment, and volunteerism ensured the success of this initiative.

A Spirit of Bayanihan Beyond Borders
Indeed, this webinar was a success because of the collective spirit of bayanihan, the collaboration of a dedicated speaker, enthusiastic participants, and hardworking organizers. It was a clear demonstration of unity, compassion, and shared growth that continues to bind Filipinos together across the globe.
Moving Forward: A Call to Live Authentically
As we conclude, may we carry forward the lessons of this session: to be more mindful, to cultivate gratitude, to live authentically, and to support one another as one global Filipino community. Let us rise together, thrive with resilience, and uphold the well-being of every Filipino wherever we may be.
Through self-awareness, OFWs are empowered not just to endure, but to flourish abroad with clarity, courage, and authenticity, transforming challenges into opportunities for growth and fulfillment.
