‘We weren’t a match anymore’: Liza Soberano opens up on Enrique Gil split

Actress Liza Soberano has finally put long-running rumors to rest, confirming that she and Enrique Gil ended their relationship almost three years ago.

Speaking on Sarah Bahbah’s “Can I Come In?” video series, Liza revealed that she had been wanting to share the truth for some time but held back out of respect for Enrique’s request. “I’ve been honestly itching to tell people this because I haven’t been very truthful, Quen hasn’t been very truthful,” she admitted.

The pair, who became one of the most popular love teams in Philippine entertainment, started dating in October 2014 and went public in 2019. Liza recalled having feelings for Enrique early in their pairing and said she genuinely thought marriage was on the horizon. But by the last year of their eight-year relationship — around the end or just after the pandemic — she was already feeling unhappy and boxed those emotions away.

Despite the breakup, Liza emphasized that their separation was filled with mutual respect and fond memories. “When I look back at our time together, I just see good moments all the time,” she said, describing Enrique as her “childhood best friend” and clarifying that “it was just, we weren’t a match anymore.”

The actress also opened up about the guilt she felt for not holding on, knowing fans expected them to stay together. Ultimately, she said, she needed space to grow and uphold values important for her younger self and future children.

Speculation about their split had been circulating since 2022, when fans noticed the couple’s absence from public events and their fewer posts about each other on social media.
