Following a successful run in June and July, wagamama is excited to announce the extension of its “Wasteless with wagamama” campaign until the end of September. Originally launched in celebration of World Environment Month in June, the “Wasteless with wagamama” campaign hopes to inspire mindful consumption and reduce food waste across the community. Here’s how Wagamama plans to achieve this:
- Reclaim & Refill Containers: Embrace sustainability with wagamama’s specially designed Tupperware, available for purchase in-store for just 12 AED. These reusable containers encourage customers to take their leftovers home, reducing food waste and fostering environmentally friendly habits. Additionally, customers will receive a 10% discount on their bill every time they dine in and takeaway food using their Wagamama Tupperware.
- Waste-less Competition: Purchase a wagamama Tupperware and get automatically entered into the Waste-less Competition. To be eligible, you must use your Tupperware at least five times between June and September. The more you participate, the higher your chances to win 1,000 AED worth of meals. This initiative not only rewards your commitment to sustainability but also highlights the importance of reducing food waste in our daily lives. The winner will be announced on 30 September 2024.
Food waste is a significant issue in the UAE, with the country generating nearly 1,000,000 tons of food waste annually. This accounts for approximately 38% of the total waste produced, a startling figure given the global food security challenges we face. The UAE government has made food waste reduction a key component of its National Food Security Strategy 2051, aiming to position the country as a global leader in sustainable food practices.
According to the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP), 34% of waste is food left on customers’ plates, indicating that customer behavior plays a crucial role in making a change.
By extending the “Wasteless with wagamama” campaign, wagamama aims to foster a greater appreciation for food and the resources needed to produce it, while offering families a chance to engage in this initiative, teaching children the importance of food conservation from an early age. This campaign underscores wagamama’s dedication to environmental sustainability and community support, reinforcing the importance of mindful consumption and waste reduction.
Here are some of the changes and improvements we’ve seen over the past two months (June and July) after implementing the new program:
- 750 boxes sold
- 388.8 kg of CO₂ equivalent greenhouse gases reduced
- 720 kg of food scraps rescued
