Visitors angered after discovering fake whale shark at new aquarium in China

Visitors to Xiaomeisha Ocean World in Shenzhen were left outraged when they found out that one of the aquarium’s main attractions, a whale shark, was actually a robot. Despite being advertised as such, many were disappointed, calling the use of a mechanical creature deceptive. The aquarium, which opened on October 1, has faced criticism for high ticket prices, long lines, and the poor condition of its marine life.

Online reviews quickly filled with negative feedback, with some accusing the park of tricking children. The park defended its decision, stating that keeping a real whale shark would be unethical and that the robot was intended to raise awareness about species protection. Despite the backlash, over 100,000 visitors attended the park during China’s national holiday in early October.

This is not the first time an animal park in China has faced scrutiny for similar tactics. Other zoos have been criticized for using fake animals, such as dyeing dogs to resemble pandas.
