Veteran broadcaster reflects on decades of service and overcoming personal challenges

One of the most respected voices on Philippine radio, Annabelle “Belle” Surara has built an impressive career as both a radio anchor and executive producer. As an anchor for NET25’s “Kapitbahay” and “Eat Connect,” and the executive producer of several shows including “Breakfast on Board” and “Health Watch,” Surara’s career reflects her deep commitment to broadcasting.

Belle’s passion for journalism was evident from a young age. During her high school years at Jose P. Laurel High School, she served as the assistant editor of the school newspaper, Ang Panitik. Even then, she had a clear vision of becoming a journalist, actively participating in national competitions like the National Secondary School Press Conference, where she earned recognition for her layout design skills. “Wala namang nag-engganyo sa akin, pero ito talaga ang naging pangarap ko,” Belle reflects, emphasizing how her ambition was self-driven and anchored by her faith in God.

Her career began after earning a degree in AB Mass Communication from Far Eastern University, Manila. Initially, Belle had no formal training in broadcasting, but her experiences as an actress during her college years shaped her communication skills. This, along with her determination, helped her break into the media industry. She notes, “Kung saan man ako naroroon ngayon, ito ay aking ginusto, pinagsikapan, at sumasampalataya na kalooban ng Panginoong Diyos.” For her, it was God’s mercy and guidance that enabled her to overcome challenges and succeed in the broadcasting field.

Surara’s journey in the industry has not been without its struggles. In 2020, she underwent partial hip replacement surgery following a fall. A year later, her husband passed away due to a heart attack. In 2022, she was diagnosed with stage 2B breast cancer and underwent surgery and radiation therapy. Despite these personal hardships, Belle remained steadfast, crediting her faith for giving her strength. “Maraming luha ang pumatak sa aking mga mata, maraming sakit ng damdamin ang naranasan ko,” she shares. But through it all, her dedication to her work and her faith helped her push through.

Her broadcasting career has been highly decorated, with numerous awards recognizing her contributions to the field. Belle has received accolades such as the Platinum Heart Media Award from the Philippine Heart Association in 2022, and the 2020 Gawad Bagong Bagani Award for Mamamahayag ng Taon. She has also earned top honors in various national broadcasting competitions, including the Ulat Sipag Awards and the Bantog Media Award, further solidifying her reputation as a credible and reliable broadcaster.

Most recently, in 2024, Belle was recognized with the Sovereign Seal of Business Triumphs and Remarkable Achievers Award for being the Most Remarkable Female Host. In addition to this, she has garnered other prestigious awards such as the Ikatlong Dakilang Filipino Award for Most Trusted Radio Broadcaster and Outstanding Host of the Year. Belle’s influence and contributions to broadcasting have made her a multi-awarded media personality who continues to inspire many in her industry.

When asked about the most challenging moments in her career, Belle recalls how she has always relied on prayer and determination to overcome obstacles. She advises aspiring broadcasters to develop patience, persistence, and a strong prayer life. “Mahalagang maging matiyaga, determinado, masipag, at higit sa lahat ay maging mapanalanginin,” she advises, highlighting the importance of dedication and faith in one’s career.

Outside of work, Belle enjoys simple pleasures such as singing, listening to music, and learning from seasoned broadcasters from other networks. Her pursuit of growth and excellence continues, as she draws inspiration from the experts she admires. Despite her numerous accomplishments, Belle remains grounded, always emphasizing her desire to fulfill the tasks entrusted to her and to honor God through her work.
