On Monday, the Vatican introduced Luce, its first-ever cartoon mascot, designed by Italian artist Simone Legno, co-founder of the Japanese-inspired lifestyle brand tokidoki. Luce, which translates to “light” in Italian, was created to resonate with young audiences through her anime-style appearance and to deliver “a message of hope and welcome,” according to a Vatican statement.
Dressed as a Catholic pilgrim in a yellow rain jacket that reflects the Vatican City flag, Luce embodies both tradition and youth culture. Her worn boots “bear witness to the path she has already travelled,” while her expressive eyes represent the “hope” of every pilgrim seeking spiritual connection, the Vatican noted.
Luce is set to debut at Italy’s pop culture event, Lucca Comics and Games 2024, where she will be showcased by the Vatican’s Dicastery for Evangelization alongside other characters.
In an Instagram post, Legno expressed his gratitude, saying, “I could never have imagined that I would bring my humble artistic contribution to the Holy See.” He shared how his Catholic upbringing in Rome instilled in him values of generosity and respect, which he now channels through his art.
As a mascot for the Jubilee in 2025—a historic event held every 25 years by the Catholic Church—Luce is designed to engage a global audience, particularly younger generations, in a celebration of faith and unity.
