In response to the growing demand for US visas in the UAE, the US Embassy is taking measures to expedite visa appointment processes. Ron Packowitz, the country consular coordinator, revealed in an interview with Khaleej Times that the embassy is actively working to increase capacity and reduce waiting times.
Due to the pandemic, there has been a significant backlog in visa appointments. Currently, the earliest available dates for visa interviews in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are in late 2024. Packowitz explained that pandemic-related restrictions had hindered the embassy’s ability to conduct interviews, leading to this unprecedented delay.
However, the embassy is prioritizing certain cases, including students, urgent business travel, medical emergencies, and applicants with recently expired visas. Students are being given special attention to ensure they can start their classes on time, and business travelers with urgent needs are also being accommodated.
Packowitz mentioned that for many residents with visas expired in the last four years, it’s possible to renew their visas through Emirates post without visiting the consulate. Additionally, he highlighted that US visa appointments can be scheduled in any country, offering flexibility to applicants.
To address the backlog, the embassy is adding extra appointments daily. Packowitz advises residents to check the official website regularly for earlier slots. He also recommends that travelers should plan their US trips at least a year in advance and avoid making irreversible arrangements until their visa is secured.
Finally, Packowitz suggested several US destinations for Middle Eastern travelers, including Chicago, New York, California, and Orlando, each offering unique experiences like local sports, theme parks, and natural wonders.
