Researchers from the University of the Philippines Manila have introduced a breakthrough in diabetes treatment by developing an ampalaya (bitter melon) tablet, which has shown promise in managing Type 2 diabetes.
The Institute of Herbal Medicine (IHM) at UP Manila launched the tablet, categorizing it as herbal medicine rather than an herbal supplement. According to IHM, herbal medicines undergo stringent testing for safety and efficacy, distinguishing them from supplements, which are often sold without therapeutic claims.
Clinical trials conducted by the researchers confirmed that the ampalaya tablet has a proven therapeutic effect on blood sugar levels, providing a natural alternative for diabetes management. “This distinction ensures that the ampalaya tablet offers a superior, scientifically validated option for managing Type 2 diabetes,” UP Manila stated.
Daisy-Mae Bagaoisan, a registered pharmacist and research assistant professor at IHM, emphasized the significance of this development, especially in countries like the Philippines where diabetes ranks among the top causes of death. “Our research on the ampalaya tablet offers a natural alternative that could complement current treatments for managing this condition,” she said.
The tablet has a stable shelf life of 18 months at room temperature and has no known side effects, making it a safe option for diabetes patients seeking herbal remedies.
