Relief is on the horizon for UAE residents who have endured weeks of punishing heat and humidity. With August well underway, both meteorological and astronomical indicators point to the end of the region’s intense summer season.
Meteorologically, summer in the UAE spans June to August—making this month the final stretch of the season. While mid-August may still bring a spike in humidity, a significant transition is approaching.
One of the most anticipated signals of seasonal change is the sighting of the Suhail star. According to Ibrahim Al-Jarwan, Chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society, the dawn appearance of this star—expected in the latter part of August—has long marked the traditional end of peak summer heat in the region. Following its rise, early morning temperatures are expected to ease gradually.
Astronomically, the end of summer is pegged to the autumnal equinox, which will occur on Monday, September 22. The following day, September 23, will officially mark the start of autumn. This year, the astronomical summer began on June 21 and will run for a total of 93 days.
So far, the season has brought sweltering highs between 42°C and 49°C across the country, along with dry winds and challenging weather conditions. But as the equinox nears, a cooler and more manageable climate is just around the corner.
