Tourists visiting the UAE will soon be able to obtain health insurance while applying for their visas, according to an announcement on Monday by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP). The ‘health insurance for tourist visas’ initiative is part of the ICP’s transformative projects.
Major-General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, director-general of the ICP, explained in a Khaleej Times report that this project will enable tourists to secure health insurance through the ICP’s online platform. The initiative aims to provide coverage for emergency medical cases by automating the process of issuing and pricing insurance packages from major UAE insurance companies.
Ramzi Ghurani, Managing Partner at Petra Insurance Brokers, praised the initiative, noting that it benefits both visitors and the local healthcare system. “Having insurance cover for all travellers is an assurance that they will be covered for their hospitalisation in case of an unexpected medical emergency. This also ensures the government and private hospitals in the country that they don’t have to foot the bill for an emergency for visitors,” Ghurani stated.
Ghurani also advised visitors to understand the extent of their insurance coverage, suggesting that those who need more comprehensive protection might consider additional private insurance.
Industry experts believe this initiative will enhance the overall experience for tourists. Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Vice President of Thumbay Healthcare, remarked, “For travellers, having health insurance is essential protection against unforeseen medical expenses, particularly for emergency medical care. Travellers to the UAE will be able to enjoy their stay with the support of this service, knowing that their health and safety are given priority from the moment they apply for their visa.”
Thumbay added that the automated procedure would offer tourists competitive insurance options, meeting their diverse needs. “As a result, tourists will have a better overall experience, and the UAE’s standing as a top vacation destination that puts safety and wellbeing first will be further strengthened,” he concluded.
