The UAE is set to create 200,000 new jobs as part of its ambitious “UAE Net Zero” initiative to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, announced Mariam Al Mheiri, the Minister of Climate Change and Environment. In a press conference in Dubai, Al Mheiri revealed that this move is expected to boost the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by three percent.
The minister highlighted six key sectors targeted for decarbonization: Power & Water, Industry, Transport, Buildings, Waste, and Agriculture, each with dedicated strategies to curb carbon emissions. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has been actively coordinating with over 45 stakeholders, conducting more than 100 meetings, and integrating over 800 feedback points in developing the Net Zero initiative.
Al Mheiri outlined five critical steps for the successful execution of the UAE Net Zero program. These include steadfast commitment to the Net Zero targets, establishing robust governance, designing and implementing governmental interventions, prioritizing decarbonization, and fostering an enabling ecosystem.
The UAE Net Zero 2050 initiative aligns with the global objectives of the Paris Agreement and the nation’s Principles of the 50, a strategic framework for economic development marking its golden jubilee. This initiative is a cornerstone in the country’s efforts to position itself as a dynamic global economy.
In preparation for COP 28, the Minister emphasized the UAE’s readiness to host international dialogues on climate change. She stressed that COP 28 is not the end goal but a step towards ongoing efforts against climate threats.
Recalling the legacy of the UAE’s Founding Father, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Al Mheiri credited his vision for shaping the nation’s current climate strategies. Significant achievements like the Etihad Rail Network, solar parks, and the upcoming nuclear power station exemplify the UAE’s dedication to its climate goals.
The UAE’s journey in climate action has been marked by key milestones, from joining the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in 1995 to launching the National Climate Change Plan and hosting international organizations like IRENA.
The minister also underscored the UAE’s commitment to the Paris Agreement’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), a framework for reducing emissions and adapting to climate impacts.
