UAE to begin midday work ban from June 15 to protect workers from extreme heat

Starting June 15, the UAE will once again enforce its annual midday work ban to shield outdoor laborers from the country’s intense summer heat. For the 21st consecutive year, outdoor work under direct sunlight will be prohibited daily between 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. until September 15.

The initiative, led by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre), aims to reduce heat-related health risks for workers during the hottest months of the year. Companies that fail to comply will face fines of AED 5,000 per affected worker, with a maximum penalty of AED 50,000 for multiple violations.

As part of the mandate, employers must provide shaded rest areas, fans or cooling systems, plenty of drinking water, electrolyte-replenishing supplements approved by local authorities, and first-aid kits at worksites.

While the rule applies broadly, exceptions will be made for tasks that cannot be delayed due to technical or safety reasons — such as asphalt paving or concrete work — and emergency operations involving utilities and public services. These exempted cases will still require official permits from relevant authorities.

Mohre will step up inspections and awareness campaigns to ensure adherence and inform both employers and workers of their responsibilities. The public is encouraged to report violations via the ministry’s call center at 600590000, website, or mobile app.

The program has recorded a strong compliance rate in recent years, with over 99% of companies adhering to the safety measure.
