The UAE has expressed a keen interest in naturalizing Filipino basketball sensation Kevin Quiambao. The 22-year-old, who has been showcasing his talent at the 33rd Dubai International Basketball Championship, is currently the talk of the town, averaging an impressive 18.67 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game, aiding the Strong Group Athletics in maintaining a flawless 3-0 record.
Quiambao’s prowess on the court has not only caught the eye of top club teams in the Middle East but has also led to the host nation, UAE, expressing their desire to have him play for their national team.
Recounting his conversation with an official from the UAE Basketball Association, Quiambao shared with Tiebreaker Times, “When they approached me and said they wanted to naturalize me, of course, I was speechless. I didn’t know how to feel. I was amazed and overwhelmed because this is a different level. It’s not just about playing at the club level. We’re talking about the national team here.”
The potential for this shift became more tangible when Quiambao was scheduled for a meeting with federation officials, underlining the seriousness of the offer. “I’ll listen to it. It would be disrespectful not to hear them out,” Quiambao stated.
Despite the allure of the offer, the transition would not be without its complexities. Quiambao has already represented the Philippines in six games for Gilas Pilipinas, meaning a switch would necessitate clearance from the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. Quiambao is mindful of the implications, noting, “If they have good plans for their national team, I’ll heavily consider it. But as I said earlier, this is a different conversation. However, I love our country.”
