UAE set to replace physical Emirates ID with facial recognition technology

The UAE is moving forward with plans to phase out the physical Emirates ID card, replacing it with a cutting-edge biometric system that uses facial recognition for identity verification.

This ambitious project is being spearheaded by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), in collaboration with strategic tech partners. It was formally revealed in a written reply to the Federal National Council (FNC), following an inquiry from council member Dr. Adnan Hamad Al Hammadi on the country’s push for electronic ID solutions.

The system leverages artificial intelligence and facial recognition to verify users’ identities via the ICP’s smart app. “Your face is your new ID,” the ICP said, as the technology allows residents to authenticate their identity securely and instantly—without needing to carry a physical card.

The new digital ID will be integrated across several key sectors, including government, banking, telecom, healthcare, hospitality, and insurance, ensuring broad usability wherever ID checks are essential. The ICP also assured that the system complies with strict national data protection regulations and robust risk management protocols to safeguard users’ personal data.

Currently in the early stages of rollout, the facial recognition system is being introduced in phases, starting with simpler services before expanding to more complex ones. Full deployment is expected within the next year.

While the Emirates ID card won’t be disappearing right away, it will gradually be replaced. Both the physical and digital ID systems are expected to coexist for now as part of the transition process.

The move is part of the UAE’s wider digital transformation agenda, aimed at reducing paperwork, streamlining public services, and enhancing convenience for residents and visitors alike.
