The UAE has dispatched over 1.6 million pieces of winter clothing and blankets to the Gaza Strip. This aid aims to alleviate the hardships faced by Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict and severe winter conditions. The Emirates Red Crescent (ERC), the humanitarian branch of the UAE government, is spearheading this initiative under its ‘Be their Warmth’ campaign.
The delivery of these crucial supplies, which includes phased distribution, is particularly vital for those suffering without adequate shelter as the temperatures drop and the Israel-Gaza conflict persists. Gaza, home to approximately 2.2 million people, has been severely affected by the conflict, with over 21,100 fatalities since October 7 and a significant portion of its population displaced.
Mohammed Omar Al Shimmar, the head of the ERC delegation in Gaza, highlighted the collaboration with Egypt to ensure the safe passage of aid through the Rafah border crossing. Additionally, the ERC is conducting a public donation campaign to gather more essential winter items. Donations ranging from Dh10 to Dh300 can be made through the Emirates Red Crescent website or at designated donation boxes in various public locations, including shopping centers.
The UAE’s efforts extend beyond material aid. The nation has been advocating for a permanent ceasefire to protect civilians and has already established a field hospital in Gaza. Furthermore, under the directives of President Sheikh Mohamed, the UAE has committed to treating 1,000 injured Palestinian children and 1,000 cancer patients in UAE hospitals. This is in addition to the numerous aid flights that the UAE has sent, carrying thousands of tonnes of essential supplies to Gaza.
