Health experts are warning UAE residents to exercise caution when using nonstick cookware due to the risk of polymer fume fever, informally called ‘Teflon flu.’ The condition, which mimics flu-like symptoms, occurs when nonstick pans with Teflon coating are heated to high temperatures, releasing harmful fumes.
Dr. Raiza Hameed, a pulmonologist at Aster Clinic in Bur Dubai, explained in a Khaleej Times report that when nonstick pans are exposed to temperatures over 500°F, chemicals are released, which can cause symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, and chest tightness. Symptoms typically develop four to ten hours after exposure.
While cases of polymer fume fever have surged globally, including over 250 hospitalizations in the US last year, local experts say it remains underreported in the UAE. Dr. Ayesha Khalid from HealthPlus Family Health Clinic noted that the illness is often mistaken for a cold, emphasizing the need for public awareness to prevent incidents.
Both doctors recommend avoiding overheating nonstick pans, particularly older cookware with damaged coatings, and suggest alternatives like cast iron or stainless steel to reduce the risk.
