UAE records 40 deaths in heavy vehicle accidents in 2024, warns Ministry of Interior

At least 40 people have died in road accidents involving heavy vehicles across the UAE in 2024, according to a report from the Ministry of Interior. The data highlights a rise in fatalities and injuries linked to large vehicle collisions, particularly trucks and buses.

According to a Gulf News report, the ministry recorded 321 traffic accidents involving heavy vehicles this year, resulting in 40 deaths and 251 injuries. The report points to a troubling trend, with a significant number of incidents caused by driver negligence, improper overtaking, and failure to maintain safe distances.

Heavy buses, which carry 27 or more passengers, were involved in 112 accidents, leading to 17 deaths and 277 injuries. Meanwhile, 126 crashes involving light buses (fewer than 27 passengers) caused 10 fatalities and 201 injuries. The statistics underline the risks associated with large vehicles and the urgent need for stricter road safety measures.

Authorities have identified several factors contributing to these accidents, including sudden lane changes, distracted driving, tyre defects, and violations of traffic regulations. In response, the Ministry of Interior has introduced new safety guidelines urging truck drivers to stick to designated lanes, maintain safe distances, check blind spots, and use turn signals early.

The ministry continues to stress the importance of following traffic laws to prevent further tragedies on UAE roads.
