President Sheikh Mohamed of the UAE has directed the release of 735 inmates from correctional and penal institutions. This act of clemency is set to lift financial burdens off the prisoners, as the President will also take care of all fines and penalties they faced. The move, reported by Wam, is part of an annual tradition aimed at embracing the generous spirit of Ramadan.
The process for selecting prisoners eligible for amnesty involves a meticulous review of proposed pardon lists, which mainly include individuals convicted of less serious offenses, particularly financial crimes. These lists are prepared by jails in each emirate and undergo thorough evaluation by prosecutors and the Attorney General before final approval.
To qualify for the pardon, inmates must have served a portion of their sentence, shown good behavior, participated in rehabilitation programs, and not been previously pardoned. The initiative also extends help to those unable to clear their financial debts, with approved charities stepping in to assist, ensuring a smooth reintegration with their families.
