UAE President honours judge who waived AED 60,000 fine on overstayer family

UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has recognized the compassion and humanity shown by Judge Hamid Al Ali of the Umm Al Quwain Federal Court of First Instance, who once waived a hefty AED 60,000 fine imposed on an Afghan family overstaying in the country.

The President praised the act, saying it reflects the deep-rooted values and noble character of the Emirati people.

Judge Al Ali recounted the touching story from years ago, involving an Afghan man who overstayed his visa along with his wife and four children for five years. The man explained that he had remained by the side of his Emirati sponsor who was battling cancer, placing the sponsor’s needs above his own legal situation.

During the court hearing, the judge noticed the man’s young son standing silently. When Al Ali asked the boy’s name, he was told it was “Zayed.” Moved by the coincidence and symbolism, the judge removed the UAE flag scarf from his shoulders and gently placed it on the child, saying: “Zayed is not fined but honoured.” He then cancelled the penalties.
