A 28-year-old Emirati man caused havoc on Jebel Ali-Lehbab Road while driving under the influence of drugs, leading to a series of collisions with police vehicles and injuring two officers, Khaleej Times reports. The incident, which occurred on March 17, began when Dubai Police received a report of a reckless driver in a white Nissan Patrol without a number plate.
The situation escalated when it was discovered that four vehicles were driving against the traffic, posing a severe risk to other motorists. In response, a task force was formed, and four police patrol cars, including one from Al Barsha Police Station, were dispatched to intercept the vehicles.
As the offenders spotted the police, they began driving against traffic at high speed towards a roundabout leading to the Lehbab area, where more patrols were stationed. The main suspect then attempted to escape by returning to the correct lane and heading towards Jebel Ali. Despite multiple orders from officers to stop, he continued his dangerous behavior.
The suspect’s vehicle was eventually surrounded by police cars in the left-most lane of the four-lane road. In a desperate bid to evade capture, he abruptly changed lanes, colliding with one police car and causing a chain reaction that involved three more police vehicles. One police car was overturned in the process, resulting in severe injuries to two officers.
The police managed to restrain and apprehend the driver, who was later found to have consumed Clonazepam and Pregabalin, medications typically used to treat epilepsy. Initially denying the charges, the man later admitted in court to using drugs, driving under the influence, endangering lives, damaging police cars, injuring others, and driving without a license plate. The next court hearing is scheduled for August 7, 2024.
