The UAE has officially lifted its conditional ban on drone use for individuals, effective January 7, 2025. The decision, announced by the Ministry of Interior in coordination with the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and other government entities, allows recreational drone operations under strict safety and regulatory conditions.
The move aligns with the UAE’s commitment to innovation and enhancing community safety, contributing to its “We the UAE 2031” vision. The Unified National Drone Platform will support the registration and operational processes for unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
Under Federal Decree-Law No. 26 of 2022, private and recreational drone users must adhere to comprehensive regulations to ensure airspace safety and privacy. Drones weighing up to 5 kg can only be flown in approved zones, as indicated in the “My Drone Hub” app. Operations are restricted to daylight hours and good weather conditions, with a maximum altitude of 400 feet above ground level.
Users must register their drones with the GCAA, inspect them before flight, and follow manufacturer instructions. Flying near airports, heliports, or within 5 km of controlled zones is prohibited. Recreational flights are limited to designated zones, with cameras allowed only in compliance with privacy laws.
The UAE aims to maintain a balance between fostering technological advancements and ensuring the safety and security of its residents. Full details of the requirements and regulations can be accessed via the UAE Drones app or the official government website.
