The UAE has embarked on a massive diabetes screening program, targeting 100,000 residents. This ambitious plan follows the success of the “Show the Red Card to Diabetes” 100-day campaign, which led to thousands of referrals to clinics for lifestyle changes aimed at reversing pre-diabetes.
The announcement came as the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) celebrated the accomplishment of the 100-day challenge under the Government Accelerators Programme. Initially aiming at early detection of type 2 diabetes in 5,000 residents, the campaign surpassed expectations by screening over 12,000 individuals.
Dr. Salem Al Darmaki, Advisor to the Minister of Health and Prevention, praised the initiative as a significant step towards reducing diabetes prevalence in the UAE. He emphasized the importance of early examinations in identifying and mitigating potential risks.
Dr. Buthaina Bin Belaila, head of Non-communicable Disease and Mental Health Department at MoHAP, disclosed that out of the 12,877 screened individuals, 8.9% were prediabetic, and 1.7% were already diabetic. Immediate referrals for lifestyle modifications were made for those diagnosed.
This campaign stands out for its use of digital questionnaires and the HbA1C test for blood sugar levels, offering a more accurate assessment over the traditional instant glucose test. Follow-up checks at three and six months are planned, with counseling and lifestyle guidance provided.
The health authorities have underscored the importance of exercise, healthy eating, and avoiding smoking and stress in reversing pre-diabetes and preventing diabetes. The year-long campaign, in collaboration with private healthcare partners, will offer free screenings, with insurance coverage applicable for those eligible.
Dr. Shamsa Lootah of Emirates Health Services (EHS) and Dr. Alia Rafee of Dubai Health highlighted their respective screening achievements. EHS’s comprehensive program identified a significant proportion of patients at risk of diabetes, emphasizing proactive healthcare services.
Dr. Omniyat Al Hajri from Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre and Dr. Hind Al Awadhi from DHA stressed the challenges in early detection and the importance of family involvement in promoting healthy lifestyles.
Ahmed Abou El Fadl, general manager of Merck Gulf, a main private partner in the campaign, called for more entities to support the initiative.
