The UAE has announced its collaboration in an international project to build the first lunar space station, the Lunar Gateway. As part of this ambitious venture, the UAE will contribute a significant element — a 10-tonne ‘Crew and Science’ airlock. This crucial component, designed by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC), will function as the main entry and exit point for astronauts on the Lunar Gateway.
The construction of the Lunar Gateway is set to commence with the launch of its first two modules in 2025, while the Emirates Module, containing the UAE-built airlock, is scheduled for a 2030 launch. This airlock, measuring 10×4 meters, is pivotal for enabling astronauts to perform spacewalks and conduct scientific research in deep space.
In addition to its technological contribution, the UAE will also make a historic human spaceflight achievement by sending the first Arab and Emirati astronaut to orbit the Moon. This milestone is part of an agreement between the MBRSC and NASA, aligning with the Artemis mission objectives.
Dubai’s Crown Prince, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, expressed enthusiasm about the project, anticipating its completion by 2030. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson highlighted the airlock’s role in facilitating advanced scientific exploration and preparation for future Mars missions.
The UAE’s commitment extends to operating the airlock and providing ongoing engineering support throughout the Lunar Gateway’s operational lifespan. This initiative builds on the UAE’s growing expertise in human spaceflight, demonstrated by the successful missions of Emirati astronauts Hazzaa AlMansoori and Sultan AlNeyadi to the International Space Station.
The UAE is also preparing for this lunar endeavor by establishing astronaut training facilities and an operations center within the Emirates. This development reinforces the UAE’s position as a key partner in NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the Moon and includes landing the first woman and the first person of color on the lunar surface.
President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice-President Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum have expressed their commitment to this project, underscoring the UAE’s dedication to collaborating with international partners in space exploration. The Lunar Gateway, capable of hosting crew for up to 90 days, will serve as a hub for lunar surface missions and a platform for diverse scientific research, marking a new era in humanity’s exploration of space.
