Doctors at M42’s Danat Al Emarat Hospital for Women and Children have successfully performed a complex surgery to remove a six-centimeter ovarian cyst from a 26-year-old pregnant woman using a modified ‘Hasson entry technique.’
Layla, an expatriate patient from the region, arrived at the hospital in severe pain at 26 weeks into her pregnancy. Diagnostic scans, including an MRI, revealed a large ovarian cyst causing her significant distress. Dr. Mohammed Kattan, a urogynaecologist and benign gynaecology laparoscopic surgeon, recommended urgent surgery due to the suspicion of ovarian torsion, which can cause the ovary to twist on its axis.
Dr. Kattan explained in a Khaleej Times report that the surgical procedure was challenging due to the cyst’s size and position. “We opted for a laparoscopic approach, which involves making small incisions and using a tiny camera and specialized surgical tools,” he said. This minimally invasive technique allows for fewer cuts and faster recovery times compared to traditional open surgeries.
Using a modified ‘Hasson entry technique,’ Dr. Kattan and his team employed recorded vision and step-by-step layering to access the uterus. The procedure required intricate maneuvers and specialized equipment to navigate the tight confines of Layla’s abdomen. The surgical team managed the complexities of dissecting tissues and detaching the cyst through strategic port placements.
Dr. Kattan praised the teamwork that led to the successful outcome for both Layla and her unborn child. “We created the right environment for Layla to put her trust in us. She appreciated our approach, where we prioritized working closely together to meet her needs and those of her baby during what could have been a traumatic time,” he said.
Following the operation, Layla needed a few weeks to recover. She later visited Dr. Kattan with her newborn and expressed her gratitude. “When I reviewed my case with doctors abroad, they all spoke highly of Dr. Kattan’s work and emphasized that it’s an extremely complex surgery. The pain I went in for was gone immediately after the surgery,” she noted.
