UAE cities transform into Studio Ghibli-style Eid wonderlands with AI-generated art

Dubai and Abu Dhabi have taken center stage online this Eid, captivating global audiences with their transformation into dreamy, Studio Ghibli-inspired landscapes—thanks to a rising trend in AI-generated art.

What began as a creative tribute to the iconic Japanese animation style has now become a social media sensation in the UAE. Studio Ghibli, known for its whimsical visuals and heartfelt storytelling, has inspired residents, government departments, and even top officials to reimagine Eid celebrations in a magical new light.

From Dubai Metro and desert camels to Emirati families celebrating with traditional desserts and Eidiya gifts, the country’s iconic symbols have been reinterpreted in soft, pastel-colored illustrations typical of Ghibli’s beloved style.

Dubai Culture Chairperson Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum joined the trend by sharing images of the city’s landmarks “reimagined in the enchanting style of Studio Ghibli through the lens of AI.” She emphasized how emerging technology is enriching culture and preserving heritage in fresh, engaging ways.

Dubai Municipality tapped ChatGPT for suggestions on Eid spots and turned the results into Ghibli art featuring parks, beaches, and landmarks like the Dubai Frame. Meanwhile, the RTA put a creative spin on its transport services, showcasing Ghibli-esque versions of the Dubai Metro, Tram, and public buses with the caption, “In Dubai, every journey feels like a Ghibli movie.”

In Abu Dhabi, the Department of Municipalities and Transport embraced the trend too, posting charming AI images of local Eid scenes—from traditional markets to warm family gatherings—capturing the spirit of joy and community.
