The RAK Diabetes Challenge 2023 (RAKDC23) has drawn attention with over 5,000 registrants, 45% of whom are obese and the remaining being overweight. A concerning statistic from the challenge revealed that 85% of the participants had HbA1c (average blood sugar) levels above 5.7.
RAKDC23, a community-driven initiative, is offering participants the opportunity to win cash rewards of up to Dh5,000 for committing to and achieving healthier lifestyles. The challenge, set to last three months, will conclude on World Diabetes Day, which is on November 14.
Initial health evaluations of the participants have shown alarming statistics emphasizing the need for increased diabetes awareness and management.
Dr. Raza Siddiqui, the executive director of RAK Hospital, highlighted the evident connection between excess weight and diabetes. He remarked, “With virtually all participants registering above their normal healthy weight range, it’s evident that there’s a direct link between weight and diabetes. Our objective is for individuals to understand the complexities of diabetes and to adopt preventive measures ensuring long-term health benefits.”
The initiative has garnered widespread attention and participation, with Dr. Siddiqui expressing his delight at the significant response, viewing it as an indication of increased health consciousness and the willingness to adopt healthier lifestyle changes.
Gender-wise, 71% of the participants are male. Geographically, 77% are from Ras Al Khaimah, 17% from Dubai, and 6% from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Ajman.
