UAE-based OFW turns passion for music into a life-changing career

Being a Filipino abroad often means embracing challenges while pursuing growth and excellence in one’s chosen field. For Jeffrey Castillo Buensuceso, a music educator and choral enthusiast, this journey has been nothing short of transformative. Currently serving as the Secondary Music Teacher and Music Coordinator at St. Mary’s Private High School in Ras Al Khaimah, he has made remarkable strides in his career while sharing his passion for choral music with diverse communities in the UAE.

Jeffrey’s academic foundation is rooted in music education, having earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music, Major in Music Education, from St. Paul University Manila. Before moving abroad in 2021, he honed his craft for over a decade in the Philippines, shaping young minds and voices as a Music Teacher and MAPEH Coordinator at St. Paul College of Makati. His tenure included leading Musica Paulinos, a high school choir that achieved recognition in various choral competitions. “I’ve always loved working with choirs of all ages and types,” Jeffrey shares with The Global Filipino Magazine, highlighting his passion for choral music.

His love for music extended beyond teaching. Jeffrey contributed as a choral music arranger and assistant conductor for Kammerchor Manila, an acclaimed church-based choir. He also worked as a violin, piano, and voice instructor at Lyric Pianos, helping nurture the next generation of musicians.

Taking risks and chasing dreams abroad

Jeffrey’s decision to work overseas was both personal and practical. Inspired by his late father’s dream for him to pursue his musical journey abroad, Jeffrey took a leap of faith during a challenging time. “After my father passed away in 2019 and with the onset of the pandemic, I realized that my current job wouldn’t allow me to save for my future. I decided to apply online for a teaching job abroad,” he recalls.

In 2021, Jeffrey landed his current role at St. Mary’s Private High School, managed by the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres. The move proved life-changing, providing him with new opportunities to grow both personally and professionally.

Like many Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), Jeffrey faced homesickness and initial struggles with work-related frustrations. “It was tough not having family physically there to support me,” he admits. However, he persevered, finding solace in music and community.

Joining the Dubai Vocal Ensemble (DVE) marked a turning point for Jeffrey. “After conducting workshops for them, I was invited to become a member in August 2024,” he says. His involvement with DVE reignited his passion for choral music and arranging. The ensemble also welcomed Jeffrey’s choral arrangements, including popular Filipino songs like Gloc9’s Walang Natira and Leah Navarro’s Isang Mundo, Isang Awit.

Another highlight of Jeffrey’s career was joining the Dubai Festival Chorus, where he performed Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 at the Dubai Opera House in September 2024 alongside the Polish National Opera Orchestra. Reflecting on this achievement, Jeffrey says, “It feels incredible to collaborate with such talented musicians and perform on such a prestigious stage.”

The joy of music and teaching

For Jeffrey, the most satisfying aspect of his work is creating and sharing music. “It feels good to hear the wonderful harmonies singers can create. I learn so much from them—not just about music but also about life and connection,” he explains. His role as a music educator allows him to nurture talent, while his involvement in the choral community keeps his artistic spirit alive.

Working in the UAE has also offered Jeffrey a unique professional environment. “Things here are efficient and convenient, and the opportunities are endless,” he notes. The country’s appreciation for hard work and dedication has allowed him to flourish in his dual roles as an educator and musician.

Jeffrey has big dreams for the future. “I want to establish a music school that will train and promote choral music,” he shares. He also aspires to create a choral arrangement of an Arabic song, blending his Filipino roots with his experiences in the UAE.

Jeffrey’s journey has taught him valuable lessons that he hopes to share with others. “Taking risks is important, but they should be calculated,” he advises. “Never put yourself in a situation where you can’t make wise decisions. Take control of your life and choose the best options for yourself.”

He also emphasizes the importance of finding the right community. “It’s hard to fight alone, but surrounding yourself with people who support and inspire you can make all the difference,” Jeffrey adds.

“Music has always been my source of strength and connection,” he concludes.
