UAE-based Filipino runners take on Central Asia’s largest marathon in Almaty

On September 29, 2024, a group of Filipino athletes from the UAE joined thousands of runners from around the world in the Almaty Marathon, the largest running event in Central Asia. This year’s marathon saw over 15,000 participants from 50 countries, running through scenic landmarks of Almaty, Kazakhstan, with breathtaking views of the Zailiyskiy Alatau Mountains.

Representing the Filipino community, John Japsay, Mark Vincent Abad, James Calvin Tambin, Paolo Viernes, and Phanexis Avila took part in the 21-kilometer category, finishing with impressive times of 1 hour and 50 minutes. Tina Bundang and Darell Salvatin also completed the 21km race as proud finishers.

In the full marathon (42 kilometers), Jonathan Tuguigui and Jaime Lazaro showcased their endurance and determination, completing the challenging race alongside other international athletes.

ther Filipino participants who joined the event include Lorente Lim, Diosdado Ramos, Mark Benedict Del Mundo, Rudelito Sator Jr., Katrina Sy-Del Mundo, Jemelynn Cruz, Fatima Flores, Pantaleon Domingo, Maevelle Ray Lighid, Joey Sarmiento, Sonny Patio, Krisabel Grace Palo, Renielyn Quito, Lorna Lim, and Kaley Hisarza.

The Almaty Marathon is more than just a competitive sporting event. As a member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), it follows global standards, offering categories such as the full marathon, half marathon, a 10-kilometer race, 10-kilometer Nordic walking, and the Ekiden relay. It also serves a philanthropic cause, with a portion of registration fees supporting children with special needs. Since its inception, the marathon has funded more than 30 charitable projects in the region.
