UAE-based Filipino professional advocates for greater representation in global pop culture industry

Ian Eleria is a name well-recognized in the pop culture industry of the UAE, serving as the Senior Operations Manager at Comicave UAE. With 16 years of international experience, his journey from the Philippines to the vibrant landscapes of the UAE reflects a story of resilience, passion, and cultural pride.

Ian’s career trajectory is a fascinating tale of versatility and ambition. Starting in 2007, his professional journey abroad began with roles in various sectors including Accounts, Stock Markets, Brokerage, FMCG, and IT, leveraging his background in audit and accounting.

“My transition in the Middle East as an Auditor for a Stock Brokerage company laid the foundation for my career abroad,” Ian shared with The Global Filipino Magazine.

It wasn’t long before his passion for pop culture and his professional acumen found a meeting point at Comicave, marking the beginning of a remarkable chapter in his life.

When asked about his decision to work abroad, Ian cited the universal desire for better opportunities and financial stability as his initial motivators.

“Greener pastures were what we were all after,” he recalled.

However, the UAE offered more than just financial benefits—it provided a platform for career progression and a chance to make significant contributions to the pop culture industry, particularly in highlighting Filipino talent.

Before his international stint, Ian was an Audit Manager in one of the Philippines’ largest banks, a role that honed his skills and ignited his empathy towards others’ plights. His career in the Philippines was marked by challenges and learning experiences that prepared him for the global stage.

Ian’s passion for pop culture is not just a career choice but a reflection of his personal interests and childhood memories.

“The industry has tied me deeply with my childhood,” he explained, highlighting the joy of transforming his love for cartoons, movies, and toys into a livelihood.

One of the most satisfying aspects of his work is the opportunity to bring Filipino talent to the forefront in the Middle East, bridging cultures and showcasing the creative prowess of his countrymen.

The UAE has been a land of opportunity for Ian, offering not just safety and economic prospects but also a chance to represent the Philippines globally. Working overseas has allowed him to meet diverse individuals and introduce Filipino creativity and culture on a global platform.

However, the journey wasn’t without its struggles. Ian faced challenges such as culture shock, homesickness, and initial employment hurdles. Yet, with resilience, support from family and friends, and inspiration from his parents, he navigated these obstacles successfully.

“All the challenges that we face and overcome make us who we are,” he reflected.

Looking ahead, Ian is excited about the potential of the pop-culture industry to further elevate the Filipino presence globally. While he has no concrete plans for returning home yet, his dedication to promoting Filipino culture and talent remains unwavering.

To fellow Filipinos abroad, Ian offers advice grounded in respect, determination, and hard work.

“Follow your passion and live your dreams,” he advises, emphasizing the importance of a positive support network, kindness, and gratitude.
