The UAE’s Public Prosecution recently highlighted the grave consequences of fleeing the scene of a traffic accident resulting in injuries.
In a move to raise public awareness about the Federal Traffic Law, a post shared on their social media channels on October 8 emphasized the severity of such an act.
As per Article 49, Paragraph 5 of Federal Law No. 21 of 1995 concerning Traffic and its amendments, individuals who do not stop at the scene of a traffic accident that has led to injuries are committing a crime. The penalties for this crime can range from a minimum fine of Dh20,000 to imprisonment, or possibly both.
The Public Prosecution stresses the importance of responsible conduct in case of a traffic accident. If involved in an accident, individuals are advised to call the police immediately at 999, no matter where they are in the UAE. It is imperative to provide the police with accurate information about the accident and one’s location and then wait for further directions.
In cases where there are injuries, all vehicles should remain in place until medical help arrives. However, for minor accidents where no injuries occur, cars can be moved to the shoulder to avoid causing further traffic disruptions. Regardless of the severity, drivers should maintain a safe distance, ideally at least 15 metres away from their car, while waiting for the police.
