UAE astronomers capture crescent moon as Ramadan draws to a close

A crescent moon marking the waning days of Ramadan was photographed over the UAE early Tuesday, as local astronomers point to Friday as the most probable date for Eid Al Fitr.

The image was captured by Emirates Astronomical Society member Tamim Al Tamimi around 6am on the 28th day of Ramadan 1447 AH, with the thin crescent visible against the dawn sky above the UAE.

Ibrahim Al Jarwan, chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society, said conditions on Wednesday, March 18, are not expected to allow for a crescent moon sighting — meaning the new lunar month of Shawwal is unlikely to begin on Thursday.

Astronomical calculations indicate Ramadan will run its full 30-day course this year, putting Eid Al Fitr on Friday, March 20.
