The Philippine Consulate General (PCG) in Milan has called on Filipinos in Italy to strictly abide by the country’s laws following the recent arrest of two Filipinos for alleged drug trafficking.
According to a Facebook post by the Consulate, the individuals were taken into custody on Tuesday night for allegedly buying and selling shabu. “Last night, authorities arrested two of our fellowmen for buying and selling shabu,” the PCG wrote.
The Consulate reminded the community not to emulate such actions, warning that those involved in illegal activities not only face serious consequences but also harm the reputation of Filipinos in Italy. “They will join in jail some of our fellowmen who were detained due to drugs,” it added. “We should not follow their lead. Let us always follow the law [of Italy].”
The incident comes amid earlier warnings from the PCG about complaints from local residents concerning the behavior of some Filipinos at Parco Bande Nere in Milan. Concerns raised include gambling, drinking, cooking and selling food, littering, and public urination.
Consul General Elmer Cato recently met with residents of the area to directly hear their concerns. The meeting, facilitated by Councilor Enrico Marcora, was held at the Comune di Milano. Following the dialogue, authorities announced they would take action against those violating park regulations.
“Because the residents’ complaints have basis, the Polizia Locale would come up with measures against those who would violate the proper use of the Bande Nere and other parks,” the Consulate said.
“Promoting better understanding between kababayan and their host communities abroad is a very important responsibility of our embassies and consulates around the world,” the PCG stressed. “Let us not tarnish our image. Let us always follow the rules and regulations in Italy.”
