Two college students found themselves behind bars after their celebratory selfie during the Sinulog festival in Cebu City took a turn for the worse. The students, identified as engineering undergraduates, were apprehended by the police from the Waterfront Station near Plaza Independencia, along Lapu-Lapu Street, in Brgy. San Roque, amid the festivities of the Fiesta Señor celebration on Sunday evening, January 21.
The arrest ensued after the duo paused to take selfies on Lapu-Lapu Street, where their actions caught the attention of patrolling officers. The students were seen making offensive gestures, specifically raising their middle fingers, while snapping photos and appearing to direct their actions towards the police on duty. This behavior led to their arrest for unjust vexation.
However, in a subsequent interview with the local radio station dyHP, the students expressed remorse and clarified that their actions were not intended to disrespect the law enforcement officers. They claimed the controversial selfie was meant for their friends, admitting to a moment of thoughtlessness. One of the students apologetically stated, “We just got carried away, and we want to apologize to the police. It wasn’t meant for them, sir. It was for our group of friends… We are very sorry, chief.”
