TV5 moves to cut ties with ABS-CBN over nearly ₱1B unpaid obligations

ABS-CBN is once again navigating a major setback after TV5 issued a notice terminating their five-year content partnership, a move triggered by alleged unpaid obligations said to be nearing the billion-peso mark. The two networks entered the agreement in 2023, allowing ABS-CBN shows to occupy key slots on TV5 and enabling both sides to co-produce various programs.

The Kapamilya Network confirmed it received the termination notice but pushed back against accusations that it deliberately held off payments. ABS-CBN said the financial strain caused by its franchise loss in 2020 continues to affect operations and revenue recovery.

In a statement released on Thursday, December 4, ABS-CBN described the development as a blow arriving at a “critical juncture” in its efforts to rebuild. The network said it has formally asked TV5 for additional time to settle the disputed amounts.

“Contrary to media reports, the amounts and manner of the claims remain disputed. We acknowledge our obligations to TV5 and are doing everything we can to address these payments. We have sought additional time to resolve this matter and are working urgently within the thirty-day period we have been given.

“While this timeline is challenging given our current circumstances, we are committed to finding a way to fulfill our obligations—not only to TV5 but to all our partners and stakeholders. We remain open to fair and reasonable solutions that recognize the extraordinary circumstances our company has faced.”

The network also strongly denied allegations that it intentionally stalled payments. “There is no truth to any insinuation that ABS-CBN willfully delayed payment. Such characterizations fail to acknowledge the severe financial constraints imposed on us through circumstances beyond our control,” the statement read.

ABS-CBN said that although some of its revenue channels have started to recover, it still “continues to operate at a loss” nearly five years after its shutdown. The company maintained that it is committed to stabilizing its operations, including honoring obligations under the TV5 agreement.

Despite the partnership’s possible end, the network assured audiences that its presence will not disappear. “Just as we overcame the initial difficulties after losing our franchise, we will not abandon our Kapamilya and will find ways to continue serving you,” ABS-CBN said.
